Why the Travoca Rigel Won the 2026 Red Dot Award

Travoca Rigel Dual-Zone eCooler won the 2026 Red Dot Award for Product Design

Anyone who has spent time off-grid knows how a bad day starts. You pack the cooler with fresh steaks, local beers, and enough veggies to last the weekend. By Saturday night, you’re digging through two inches of murky, freezing water, trying to rescue a soggy pack of bacon.

We’ve all been there. And frankly, we got tired of it.

When we started Travoca, we set out to build gear that didn't just survive the elements, but actually made life outside feel a little more like home. We wanted to build something that looked incredible on your tailgate, ran whisper-quiet under a starry sky, and kept your ice cream frozen and your beers cold.

It turns out, the design world was paying attention.

We are incredibly honored to announce that the Travoca Rigel Dual Zone eCooler has been awarded the prestigious 2026 Red Dot Award for Product Design.

To celebrate, we wanted to take a step back and talk about how we got here—and why this award is a win for everyone who believes that the best moments are the ones shared around a campfire.

A Night in the Virginia Mountains

To understand why the Rigel looks and works the way it does, you have to go back to a single night in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

Our founder had spent nearly twenty years designing high-end home appliances. He knew thermodynamics, premium compressors, and sleek kitchen aesthetics inside and out. But he was also a guy who loved to escape.

On his very first overlanding trip, sitting under a massive, clear night sky, he realized something. Why do we leave all the comforts of modern engineering behind the second we hit the road? Why does outdoor gear have to feel clinical, plastic, or painfully basic?

That night, the idea for Travoca was born. The mission was simple: bring the warmth, reliability, and ease of home to the open road—no compromise on performance, and definitely no compromise on style.

Elegantly Rugged: Rethinking the 12V Portable Fridge

When we partnered with Dave Gibson—a legendary professor of outdoor product and industrial design—to bring the Rigel to life, we told him we didn't want just another plastic box.

"We wanted to go beyond just adding another product to the mix," Dave explains. "The overlanding category is relatively new and hungry for great design. We wanted to set a new standard."

The result is what we call Elegantly Rugged™:

Classic Woody Nostalgia

&

Heavy-Duty Cold-Rolled Steel

The Rigel’s design is a deliberate nod to the classic Woody station wagons and vintage panel vans that pioneered the American road trip. We wrapped its heavy-duty, cold-rolled steel body in an organic, forest-inspired green, then added customizable bamboo plywood panels.

It’s tough enough to take a beating on a washboard dirt road in Utah, but elegant enough to look right at home at a backyard barbecue.

The Tech Under the Hood: No Ice, No Mess, No Worries

Of course, a beautiful design doesn't mean much if your food spoils on day three of a five-day overlanding trip. Underneath those warm bamboo panels, the Rigel is packed with serious, field-tested engineering.

Here is how we redesigned the portable cooling experience from the ground up:

  • Vacuum-Insulated Panels (VIP): Just like your favorite double-wall steel tumblers, the Rigel uses premium 5-layer VIP technology. This keeps the cold locked in so efficiently that it delivers up to 50% longer thermal protection than standard 12V fridges, while drawing minimal power from your portable power station (like our Vega 1500).

  • Dual-Zone Freedom: You shouldn't have to choose between frozen burgers and fresh greens. Every Rigel in our lineup features two completely independent zones. Want a freezer on the left and a fridge on the right? You got it. Controlled right from the physical display or our mobile app.

  • Toshiba Technology Compressor: We used an upgraded, ultra-quiet compressor that can pull temperatures down from a warm room to a freezing 32°F in just 20 minutes, and all the way down to -4°F in 25 minutes flat.

  • Reversible Lid: When your rig is packed to the roof, space is tight. The Rigel’s insulated lid opens from both directions and can be fully removed. No matter how you pack your trunk or slide, you can always get to your drinks.

Better Outside, Together

At the end of the day, we don't build gear to win trophies—even ones as coveted as the Red Dot. We build it for the real-world moments that happen far beyond the showroom floor, in the places where wild spaces meet human connection.

We build for the Explorists—the weekend warriors who hook up their teardrop trailers on a Friday afternoon, desperate to swap glowing blue office screens for the deep green of the pines. For them, the Rigel is about effortless unplugging. It’s knowing that when they reach that remote lakeside spot, their food is perfectly fresh, the local craft IPAs are frosty, and they don't have to waste a single second of their precious two days off worrying about melting ice or soggy hot dog buns.

We build for the Nomads—the full-time vanlifers, remote creatives, and highway poets who have turned the open road into their actual living room. For these modern road-dwellers, our eCooler isn't just camping gear; it's a vital, everyday home appliance. It’s the absolute peace of mind that comes from ultra-low power draw while working off-grid, ensuring their fresh produce stays crisp for weeks on end while they chase the horizon from coast to coast.

And we build for the Extreme Adrenalists—the hardcore overlanders and off-road builders who push their heavily modified rigs to the absolute limit. These are the adventurers who rattle down punishing washboard dirt tracks in Moab, climb boulder-strewn passes in Colorado, and camp in conditions that would make ordinary gear shake to pieces. They need the dent-resistant strength of heavy-duty cold-rolled steel, reliable Toshiba compressor technology that won't skip a beat on a steep 45-degree incline, and gear that is every bit as tough as the trails they conquer.

We make gear because we believe comfort, connection, and freedom taste better under open skies.

When the logistics of camping disappear—when you don't have to worry about running out of ice, draining your vehicle battery, or dealing with soggy food—something shifts. The tailgate drops, the laughter starts, and you’re free to stay one more night.

We want to say a massive thank you to our incredible community of adventurers who have trusted us on their journeys. We celebrated this win at the Red Dot Gala in Essen, Germany this July, and more importantly, we’ll be celebrating it on the trails with you.

See you out there.
